The Internet Newspaper Ethics Committee, chaired by Lee Jae-jin, announced on April 29 that it is recruiting its first cohort of university student supporters to promote journalistic ethics and train future reporters.

The committee has formalized the student supporters program as a standing initiative—the first time a self-regulatory body has done so. Applications are open via Google Form from April 29 through May 15, and selected candidates will be notified individually on May 22.

Supporters will attend seminars and training sessions connected to the committee and partner organizations, including a National Assembly policy forum, and will conduct reporting assignments. Partner organizations include the Korea Press Foundation, the Korea Copyright Protection Agency, and the Korea Press Arbitration Commission.

Last year the committee ran a pilot version of the program. Participants covered the Internet News Ethics Policy Forum at the National Assembly, reporting on keynote addresses and panel discussions and sharing their work across social media and campus outlets.

The move to a permanent program follows the pilot’s outcomes. The committee will select exemplary pieces produced by supporters for publication on its official website and for use in press materials.

The program is open to university students interested in journalism and media, especially those with skills in content creation and social media. The term runs from late May through November. Supporters will receive reporting stipends and a certificate of completion issued by the committee.

A committee official said, “The pilot confirmed the potential to expand media-ethics engagement through youth participation. Starting with this first cohort, we plan to institutionalize the student supporters program and steadily broaden the base for self-regulation that includes young people.”
