The National Union of Media Workers will mark its 30th anniversary on Nov. 23 with a founding ceremony at 7 p.m. in the International Conference Hall on the 20th floor of the Seoul Press Center. The hall is the same venue that hosted the launch of the Federation of Media Labor Unions (Media Labor Federation) on Nov. 26, 30 years ago. The event is expected to draw many leading figures from Korea’s media industry, including former lawmaker Kwon Young-gil, the federation’s first chairman.

The program will also include the 28th Democratic Press Awards ceremony. The judges selected the late lawmaker Roh Hoe-chan for a special award in the activism category; his widow is expected to accept the honor on his behalf. The top Democratic Press Award went to SBS’s investigative unit, “Digging to the End.” The panel praised the team’s series of reports on Samsung, saying they exemplified journalists’ commitment to their duties.
