ElevenLabs: An example of AI voice use that meets transparency and ethical standards

AI audio technology company ElevenLabs restored the late DJ Kim Gwang-han’s voice using artificial intelligence and showcased it in a Gyeongin Broadcasting special. The project was part of the station’s ‘Park Hyun-jun’s Radio Gaga’ 20th-anniversary special, which aired on the 3rd.
On the 16th, ElevenLabs said it used its AI voice-cloning technology to recreate DJ Kim Gwang-han’s voice for the broadcast. The restoration emphasized his characteristic tone and hosting manner and, the company said, produced a memorable moment for host Park Hyun-jun and listeners.
The project went beyond mere voice replication and underscored transparency in AI-generated content. ElevenLabs said it applied C2PA—the international standard for labeling AI-generated content—to the voice data. That implementation included metadata identifying whether the voice was AI-generated, the company said, making the content’s origin and creation clearer.
ElevenLabs described the approach as a safeguard to ensure ethical use and accountability of the technology, adding that the restoration was carried out with the deceased’s family’s consent and in accordance with the company’s guidelines.
On the day of the broadcast, the band Jannabi also performed live. After hearing the AI-restored voice of DJ Kim Gwang-han, host Park Hyun-jun said, \”I felt overwhelmed, as if he were right there cheering me on.\”
ElevenLabs said the case demonstrated AI voice technology’s potential in media and cultural content and that it plans to broaden its applications through further collaborations.
Hong Sang-won, head of ElevenLabs Korea, said, \”We’re honored to bring back the voice of DJ Kim Gwang-han, an iconic figure in South Korean radio, using ElevenLabs’ technology. We hope this project serves as an example of AI applied with both technical rigor and emotional sensitivity.\”
