[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Actress Youn Yuh-jung’s younger son, Jo-neul, spoke candidly about his love and respect for his mother.
On April 9, Professor Sam Richard uploaded a video to his YouTube channel titled “Jo-neul Goes to LA Koreatown with a Hip-Hop Manager (feat. Actress Youn Yuh-jung’s Son).”
In the video, Sam Richard visits Koreatown in Los Angeles to meet Jo-neul, who works as a hip-hop manager. Richard tells Jo-neul, “You’re one of the most interesting third‑culture people I’ve met.” The term “third culture” refers to someone raised outside their parents’ native culture during their formative years.
Jo-neul described himself as a Korean living in the U.S., saying he grew up in Korea and attended an international school. He moved to the United States for college and now lives in Los Angeles. Richard added that Jo-neul has built a career in hip-hop and operates as both a consultant and an artist.
Jo-neul said he originally lived in New York and has been in LA for eight to nine years. “LA feels like the starting point of Korean immigration in this country,” he said, adding that walking the neighborhood lets him experience the culture of the early immigrant community firsthand. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized I’m closer to an American who grew up in Korea than to a typical Korean‑American. My upbringing and school life were completely different from Koreans raised in LA,” he explained, reflecting on his identity.
He recalled that attending an international school exposed him to classmates from many countries, which made him more open-minded. Working in a hip-hop group also familiarized him with street culture. “When I first came to the U.S., I worked with a rap group called Gangsta. I worked with DJ Premier and MC Guru. They more or less helped raise me, so I carry a strong New York hip-hop cadence,” he said.
On the concept of third‑culture identity, Jo-neul said, “Now that I’m 43, I feel like I understand it better. Ultimately, it’s a blend of cultures. I was born in the U.S., went to American schools, and attended college in the U.S., but my DNA is Korean and I spent part of my childhood in Korea. Different cultures have mixed in me, and I’ve developed a sponge-like ability to absorb them.”
“Inside me flows Korean culture and American culture, and hip-hop runs through me,” he added. “I think it’s a truly beautiful mix.”
Richard remembered asking to see a photo when Jo-neul mentioned his mother was a well-known actress. “The moment I saw it, I said, ‘Wait — is this your mother?’” Richard recalled. “He reacted in a typically Korean way: modest rather than boastful.”
Jo-neul agreed, noting that humility is highly valued in Korean culture. “My mother is a famous actress and an Oscar winner. I’m extremely proud of her,” he said, expressing his respect for Youn Yuh-jung.
Youn Yuh-jung married singer Jo Young-nam in 1974 and moved to the United States. The couple had two sons, Joel and Jo-neul; they divorced in 1987, and Youn raised both children as a single mother.
Jo-neul was reportedly an informal manager and quiet adviser during Youn’s 2021 Oscar campaign, helping behind the scenes. In her acceptance speech, Youn thanked her two sons for getting her out to the set.
