[Sports Today reporter Song O‑jeong] Actor Lee Sang‑i addressed criticism that his character Woojin appears weaker in Season 2 than he did in Season 1.
On April 8, at a café in Samcheong‑dong, Seoul, we sat down with Lee to discuss the Netflix original series Hounds Season 2.
The new season, which premiered on April 3, follows Geon‑woo and Woojin — who previously took down a brutal illegal loan shark ring — as they go after a global illegal boxing league driven by money and violence, delivering another satisfying straight hook.
Asked what’s changed since Season 1, Lee said, “If Season 1 felt childlike and boyish, Season 2 presents him closer to a young adult. In my portrayal, Woojin shifts from an active boxer to a coach for his family and younger sibling. That role takes a toll on his body and leaves him worn down and weaker, so that change felt natural to me.”
He added, “The way the show handles conflict with the villain has evolved. In Season 1 they united and worked together; here, Geon‑woo (played by Woo Do‑hwan) takes on so much responsibility that he initially tries to solve things on his own. They remain family, but we wanted to show the different perspectives they each bring to resolving the case.”
Many viewers lamented that Woojin appears less capable than in Season 1. Still, by the finale he returns to the ring and teams up with Geon‑woo to stop the villain Baek‑jung (played by Jung Ji‑hoon), completing their narrative build‑up. Lee explained, “That arc was meant to build toward them coming together. Each tries to handle the case from their own position, but once they realize how powerful Baek‑jung is, they understand that ‘we have to unite.’ After they grasp each other’s thinking, they combine forces and commit to fighting together this time, using more tactical boxing intelligence. I believe that was the director’s intention as well.”
