[Sports Today reporter Im Si-ryeong] Seo Hyun-woo’s villainous turn in Climax felt distinctly different.

In a guest appearance on ENA’s Monday–Tuesday drama Climax, Seo Hyun-woo elevated the series’ intensity and left a memorable mark on viewers. He plays film producer O Gwang-jae—once a dominant figure in Chungmuro, Korea’s historic film district—and his performance became a driving force that opened cracks in the show’s narrative and propelled the first half of the story.

Seo rendered O Gwang-jae with precision and nuance, turning what could have been a standard antagonist into a singular, layered presence that enriched Climax. Surrounded by characters with potent backstories, he avoided simply foregrounding a traumatic past; instead, he cloaked the role in a distinctive mystique that gave the series an alluring texture.

Where a typical power-driven villain might rely on physical intimidation or emotional volatility, Seo chose restraint. He traded overt aggression for an emphasis on the character’s hypocrisy and distorted self-regard—someone who genuinely believes he exists on a different plane.

Even small touches of dialogue like “Did you…?” subtly revealed a personality intoxicated by superiority. His cadence and posture convincingly sold a man who sees himself as an artist, consumed by the conviction “I am different.”

Above all, Seo’s intelligence as an actor showed in how he served the series’ overall balance. Rather than grandstanding, he favored controlled choices and a neutral tonal quality that helped sustain the drama’s mood. The carefully considered design of his character blended seamlessly into Climax and deepened viewer engagement.

As a result, O Gwang-jae operated as more than a mere villain; he functioned as a narrative catalyst, distorting other characters’ decisions and relationships. Seo Hyun-woo rattled the show’s first half while crafting a one-of-a-kind character that lingered after the episode ended.

By meticulously shaping the character’s essence, Seo delivered an arresting antagonist and reaffirmed his status as an irreplaceable presence. Audiences will be watching closely for his next move.
