Tving Original Yumi’s Cells Season 3 premieres April 13. The series returns roughly four years after Season 2 (2022), with Kim Go-eun once again leading as Yumi. Given the show’s track record as a seasonal success, the third installment is already drawing significant attention ahead of its debut.

Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, Yumi’s Cells has been praised for its inventive premise, portraying everyday life and emotions through the perspective of cells. Both Season 1 and Season 2 paired tight storytelling, strong performances, and imaginative direction, delivering both critical buzz and commercial appeal.

When Kim Go-eun’s casting was first announced, some viewers argued her look didn’t match the webtoon’s visuals. After the series aired, critics credited her with bringing the character to life through realistic acting and delicate emotional nuance. Reviewers said she convincingly charted the character’s growth and emotional shifts, making the role unmistakably her own.

In Season 1, Ahn Bo-hyun, and in Season 2, GOT7’s Park Jin-young served as the male leads opposite Kim Go-eun, delivering romantic chemistry that resonated with viewers. Both actors entered the series with strong name recognition and dedicated fanbases, and their pairings with Kim were widely seen as positive creative matches.

By contrast, Kim Jae-won, who will star opposite Kim in Season 3, was born in 2001. His age and public profile create a different dynamic from previous co-stars. From the moment of casting, the idea of a romance with a promising actor ten years younger sparked curiosity — a mix of excitement for a fresh pairing and some cautious skepticism.

Last year, Kim Go-eun reaffirmed her acting credentials with Netflix projects Eun-jung and Sang-yeon and The Price of Confession. Working alongside Park Ji-hyun and Jeon Do-hyun, she delivered back-to-back pieces centered on women’s narratives and earned praise for natural, emotionally grounded performances. After establishing a distinct presence in womance-driven stories, her return to a romantic arc with a male lead has generated additional interest.

Kim Go-eun debuted in the 2012 film Eungyo and, from the outset, combined critical attention with artistic credibility. Over 14 years she has remained a leading figure, moving fluidly between film and television, taking on diverse genres, and demonstrating consistent acting skill. Critics note she has built a standout filmography among actors born in the 1990s.

Season 3 of Yumi’s Cells carries weight beyond a routine sequel. While it builds on the established world and characters from prior seasons, it must also expand the story through new figures and relationships. In a romance-centered narrative, the chemistry between the leads is a key factor in audience immersion.

That makes Kim Jae-won’s chemistry with Kim Go-eun the season’s main point of interest. The two appeared in the same project, Eun-jung and Sang-yeon, but never shared scenes: a different actor (Do Young-seo) played the younger version of Kim’s character, Ryu Eun-jung. Season 3 therefore represents their first true on-screen pairing, which has heightened anticipation.

Kim Jae-won has been rapidly building his profile through recent roles. Since his casting news for Yumi’s Cells Season 3 broke in May last year, he left brief but memorable impressions in Eun-jung and Sang-yeon and Lady Dua, marking him as a performer with promise. Though he is not yet a household name, his fresh image and solid acting have put him on the list of next-generation talents to watch.

With a proven source material, Kim Go-eun as its central anchor, and the addition of newcomer Kim Jae-won, Yumi’s Cells Season 3 raises questions about what new chemistry and narrative energy will emerge. Viewers will be watching to see if this mix of stability and novelty translates into another hit.
