[MyDaily = Reporter Lee Jung-min] As the film ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’ sustains a long run, ‘Project Hail Mary’ has quickly drawn audiences, signaling a change in the box office dynamic.
On the 29th, the Korea Film Council’s integrated box office system reported that ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’ attracted 225,306 viewers and held the No. 1 spot. Its cumulative audience reached 15,427,516, and it is rapidly narrowing the gap with ‘Extreme Job,’ the second-biggest hit in Korean box office history.
Now in its eighth week, the film continues to pull steady crowds, demonstrating notable staying power. In short, a single title has been keeping theaters busy for an extended stretch.
Into this environment, ‘Project Hail Mary’ has emerged as a new factor. The film drew 173,607 viewers the same day to take the No. 2 spot, bringing its total to 1,003,854 — surpassing one million admissions just 11 days after release.
Its rapid audience growth and strong advance-ticket sales suggest room for further expansion. Analysts say the film’s sci-fi genre, distinct from the current hit, appears to be widening the overall audience base.
At the moment, while ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’ still dominates, ‘Project Hail Mary’ is closing in fast. The market seems to be moving beyond reliance on a single blockbuster, with films of different genres drawing crowds simultaneously.
If this trend continues, it could have a positive ripple effect across an industry that had been sluggish. Observers are watching whether the long-running success of ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’ combined with the rise of ‘Project Hail Mary’ can lift the overall mood at the box office.
