Actor Byeon Woo-seok returns to television roughly two years after the end of the breakout tvN series Run With Seon-jae on Your Back (often shortened to Run-With), landing squarely on a career-defining proving ground. Industry observers are watching closely to see whether the momentum he built from pairing with a high-profile co-star will sustain, or whether he can cement his status with a new signature role.

IU and Byeon headline 21st Century Grand Consort (shortened here to Grand Consort), which premieres on MBC on April 10. Set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy, the drama follows a woman (IU) who has everything except social status and a prince—the king’s son—who has nothing. Together they fight to reshape their fates and overturn class barriers. Byeon plays Ian Daegun Iwan, a melancholic royal who, aside from his lineage, possesses nothing.

This role is especially significant for Byeon. After skyrocketing to fame with Run-With, which wrapped in May 2024, he is back on the small screen for the first time in two years. The earlier series turned him into an advertising blue chip: brands flocked to sign him, and the industry slapped a roughly 10 billion KRW valuation on his name (7.5 million USD). That two-year hiatus has only intensified attention on how his next project will be received.

Byeon’s rise to mainstream visibility came about eight years after his debut, largely thanks to Run-With. Yet even at the height of that show’s buzz, critics flagged shortcomings in his acting. The prevailing view was that the character Ryu Seon-jae fit Byeon’s natural persona, and his chemistry with co-star Kim Hye-yoon—an actor widely regarded for her solid technique—created a positive synergy. In many ways, Byeon was the primary beneficiary of that series. He has repeatedly credited Kim Hye-yoon in interviews, saying their dynamic helped elevate his performance and make the character shine.

Grand Consort has raised expectations partly because Byeon is paired with IU, one of Korea’s most bankable stars. IU demonstrated both range and star power in last year’s I Was Completely Duped and reinforced her acting credentials by winning the top prize at the Blue Dragon Series Awards. With IU generally seen as a dependable performer, many viewers are eager to see what new chemistry the two leads will generate.

After the brief teaser for Grand Consort surfaced, however, some viewers expressed disappointment in Byeon’s performance. Critics said his delivery felt awkward in a historical register and that his portrayal didn’t feel far enough removed from his Ryu Seon-jae work—leading some to call his approach predictable. At the same time, fans praised his looks and argued he visually embodies the role of a prince.

Grand Consort will be an important yardstick for Byeon’s competitiveness as an actor. Beyond advertising clout and headline-making popularity, can he deliver a performance that stands on its own and add another defining credit to his résumé? A central question is whether he can validate the explosive response to Run-With and the 10 billion KRW (7.5 million USD) valuation attached to his marketability. If he can silence doubts about his craft, this role could mark a major leap forward. If not, critics may argue his popularity was inflated.

With the series about to premiere, industry insiders and viewers alike are focused on how Byeon will perform and how his chemistry with IU will affect the show’s quality and box-office prospects on television. Grand Consort’s reception is likely to have a meaningful impact on Byeon’s career trajectory.
