Actor Yoo Ji-tae, who portrays Han Myeong-hoe in the film The Man Who Lives with the King, revealed he suffered multiple health issues after rapidly bulking up for the role, drawing attention.
On March 23, the YouTube channel ‘[Preview] You Quiz on the Tube’ uploaded a clip titled “Yoo Ji-tae Became Han Myeong-hoe: Behind the Scenes of Wangsa-nam and the Dance-King Kids with 24 Million Views!” In the video, Yoo sat down with host Yoo Jae-seok and shared behind-the-scenes stories from the film.
Yoo quipped that it was “You Quiz” that helped push The Man Who Lives with the King past 10 million admissions. He also said he found director Jang Hang-jun’s laid-back approach challenging, arguing the cast needed to commit fully to the drama — but when the director kept calling out, “Yoo Ji-tae, the icon of Korean cinema!” it undercut the intensity.
Notably, Yoo said he increased his weight to over 100 kg (about 220 lb) for the film, and his method for bulking up made headlines. “I ate an absurd amount,” he admitted, adding that the extreme weight change led to high cholesterol, acute gastritis, and colitis.
Earlier, Jang Hang-jun’s film recorded 14.75 million admissions as of the 22nd, making it the third-highest-grossing title in Korean box office history. The film also gave Yoo his first “10-million actor” credit.
The segment is scheduled to air on tvN on the 25th at 8:45 p.m.
