[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] IU, Byun Woo-seok, Noh Sang-hyun and Gong Seung-yeon are setting their sights on very different ambitions.
MBC’s new Friday–Saturday drama ‘The 21st-Century Grand General’s Wife’ is set in an alternate, 21st-century constitutional monarchy version of South Korea. The series centers on a class-defying romance: a chaebol heiress who outwardly has everything but is, by status, a commoner, and a royal prince who—despite his bloodline—has been denied the privileges of power. Both are determined to shape their own destinies.
Character posters released on the 23rd showcase the distinct charisma of Seong Hee-ju (IU), Prince Ian (Byun Woo-seok), Min Jung-woo (Noh Sang-hyun) and Queen Dowager Yoon I-rang (Gong Seung-yeon). Gathered in a palace that blends modern design with traditional elements, the four figures carry taglines that hint at the lives they’ve led and the choices they face.
First up is Castlebeauty CEO Seong Hee-ju. Born a commoner but poised to enter the palace as a great general’s wife, she asserts, \”I’ll win even if I have to get my hands dirty.\” Her relentless drive raises the question: will this single-minded ambition propel her upward in a rigid social hierarchy?
Prince Ian, the king’s second son with no claim to the throne, delivers a chilling line: \”Do you think there’s a right time to hunt?\” Living under the palace’s strict code—never to outshine, never to speak—he has long suppressed a volatile nature. Viewers will be watching to see how marriage to Seong He-ju might ignite change.
Prime Minister Min Jung-woo takes a more measured tone: \”Let it play out; it’ll probably be just a blip.\” A longtime friend of Prince Ian and a stabilizing force between the monarchy and the cabinet, Min is poised to face unexpected emotional upheaval once the marriage unfolds.
Finally, Queen Dowager Yoon I-rang delivers a pointed question: \”Is there any place for happiness in a royal marriage?\” Ever the guardian of royal authority and dignity, her reaction to Prince Ian’s choice to marry a commoner will be one of the series’ key tensions.
Through its character posters, ‘The 21st-Century Grand General’s Wife’ paints four very different worldviews as these characters converge in the palace. Whether they challenge the fate they’ve been given or fight to preserve it, inevitable conflicts among them promise compelling drama.
