[Sports Today reporter Song O-jeong] Actor Bae Yoon-kyung spoke candidly about behind-the-scenes moments from her recent work and her perspective as an actress.
Bae earned notice for an unpredictable, magnetic turn as Gyeong-a in Lezhin Snack’s short drama The Dad Is a Guy Friend, on which Lee Byeong-heon—director of the film Extreme Job and the series Melo Is My Nature—served as writer and director. She heightened Gyeong-a’s appeal not only through bold character choices but by tracing subtle emotional shifts as the story unfolded. In a segment on her agency PrainTPC’s YouTube channel, in the series The Actors, she shared the role’s backstory and her process.
Bae said the first script stunned her with its intense, unpredictable plotting and vividly drawn characters. To build Gyeong-a, she focused on balancing the emotional nuances in Lee’s distinctive dialogue. Because the project demanded many creative ideas, she experimented with several approaches and expressed gratitude to senior colleague Oh Jung-se for his help during preparation.
She called last year’s stage debut in the play Visitation a major challenge. Having long wanted to perform on stage, she felt it was the right moment to begin. Set entirely in a prison visiting room and presented as a two-person drama, the play relies solely on dialogue and emotional depth. Across roughly 75 minutes of uninterrupted performance, she concentrated on sustaining the emotional arc and steady breathing so the momentum never wavered.
Bae acknowledged she’s still developing her own method for preparing characters. Once inclined to analyze scripts more rationally, she now explores varied approaches to get closer to each role. She said she welcomes advice from the senior actors at her agency and finds the experimentation itself deeply rewarding.
She also revealed facets of her daily life, describing how she spends days without schedules and the things people often say about her, offering a personable side that contrasts with her on-screen characters.
With The Dad Is a Guy Friend, Bae not only pulled off a striking acting transformation but also exposed the deep thought and effort behind her performances. By rendering Gyeong-a as a fully dimensional character, she left a strong impression and raised expectations for her next projects.
