The new Coupang Play series, directed by Lee Tae-gon and Kim Jun-hyung, is a collaboration between Poongnyun Broadcasting, Borderless Film, and Singapore’s Mediacorp. The show follows a high school girl who writes romance novels about her attractive teachers, only to find herself unexpectedly entangled with them in real life, leading to a whirlwind of high school drama.
Rising star Kim Hyang-gi takes on the lead role of Yeoui-joo, a seemingly ordinary student with a secret life as a romance novelist. Kim, who transitioned from child actor to leading lady, has proven her acting chops in films like “Along with the Gods” and TV series such as “Crash Course in Romance.” In this new project, she’s set to captivate audiences with her nuanced portrayal of Yeoui-joo, a character who deftly navigates between reality and fantasy.
Cha Hak-yeon steps into the shoes of Gaosu, a Mensa member with an IQ of 156 and a genius for mathematics. Known for his versatile performances in dramas like “Tunnel” and “Mine,” Cha is expected to bring intellectual charm and a strong screen presence, promising electric chemistry with Kim Hyang-gi.
The series also boasts an impressive lineup of heartthrob teachers. K-pop idol Kim Jae-hyun (from N.Flying) plays the multilingual and charismatic Japanese teacher Noda-ju. Son Jung-hyuk takes on the role of the athletic and charming PE instructor Jeong Gi-jeon, while Kim Dong-kyu rounds out the trio as the kind-hearted Korean language teacher Yoon Dong-joo. Each actor is poised to bring their unique flair to the show.
At the helm is director Lee Tae-gon, acclaimed for his work on hit series like “Age of Youth” and “Deborah!” Lee’s knack for blending reality with imagination is expected to give “The Absolute Value of Romance” its distinct, vibrant tone. Adding to the anticipation is screenwriter Lee Min-joo, making her full-length series debut after winning the CJ ENM O’PEN 2021 award.
The production team includes Poongnyun Broadcasting and Borderless Film, known for their work on critically acclaimed dramas like “Connection” and “Deborah!” Singapore media giant Mediacorp joins as a co-producer, bringing its expertise across various platforms including TV and radio.
“The Absolute Value of Romance,” promising a fresh spin on the high-teen genre, is scheduled to hit Coupang Play this April, potentially setting a new benchmark for Korean teen dramas.
