Sisa Week | Jung-gu = Lee Young-sil A story that begins with a woman’s death ultimately unveils the raw face of desire. Netflix’s new series ‘Lady Dua’ explores the meaning of authenticity through the clash between a woman who yearns to be a luxury brand, even if fake, and the man who pursues her ambition.

On October 10th, a press conference for ‘Lady Dua’ was held at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman in Jung-gu, Seoul. Director Kim Jin-min, along with actors Shin Hye-sun and Lee Jun-hyuk, attended the event to share insights about the project.

‘Lady Dua’ follows the story of Sara Kim (played by Shin Hye-sun), a woman who aspires to be a luxury brand even if it’s counterfeit, and Mu-gyeong (played by Lee Jun-hyuk), the man who tracks her ambition. The series has generated buzz due to the collaboration between director Kim Jin-min, acclaimed for his solid direction in series like ‘Extracurricular’ and ‘My Name’, and promising writer Chu Song-yeon, known for her tightly woven narratives.

Kim Jin-min introduced the series, saying, “This is a work that explores human desire, transformed into a series. It’s packed with the thrill of watching someone pursue their ambition and another chasing that person.” He added, “I hope viewers can also freely reflect on their own desires while watching.”

‘Lady Dua’ opens with the discovery of Sara Kim’s severely disfigured body in the heart of Cheongdam-dong. Rather than simply tracing the events leading to one person’s death, the narrative unfolds like a puzzle, revealing truths that gradually come to light following Sara Kim’s demise.

Director Kim Jin-min explained his attraction to this structure, stating, “The composition was incredibly intriguing. Watching the story unfold in unpredictable ways, I realized this was a rare find in today’s scripts.”

Key elements to watch for include the revelations about Sara Kim’s past as the episodes progress and the cliffhanger endings in each episode. Sara Kim’s evolving personas serve to intensify the story’s tension. The themes of fake versus real, substance versus illusion, and desire versus vanity elevate ‘Lady Dua’ from a simple mystery to a thriller that mirrors modern society’s desires.

The production team played a crucial role in creating the series’ unique mysterious atmosphere. The cinematography delicately captures the characters’ psychology, while the editing smoothly transitions between past and present. The contrast between the lavish Buduah store and Mu-gyeong’s cold office reflects each character’s personality and situation, enhancing viewer immersion. The costumes revealing Sara Kim’s various personas and the tension-building soundtrack further elevate the work’s quality.

Director Kim Jin-min shared, “I gave the art director considerable freedom. My only guideline was that it should be convincing from the viewer’s perspective and, above all, look beautiful and luxurious.” He expressed satisfaction with the results, adding, “The art and costume teams worked hard to maintain balance, and the cinematography and lighting effectively captured the tone of the mystery thriller. The collaboration of these talented professionals gradually elevated the overall quality of the work.”

◇ A Bold Choice: Shin Hye-sun and Lee Jun-hyuk’s Fresh Performances

The performances of Shin Hye-sun and Lee Jun-hyuk are highly anticipated. Shin Hye-sun portrays the enigmatic Sara Kim, while Lee Jun-hyuk plays the tenacious detective Mu-gyeong, who relentlessly tracks Sara Kim’s trail. Their intense on-screen dynamic promises to captivate viewers, especially considering this is their first collaboration since the acclaimed drama ‘Stranger’ eight years ago.

Shin Hye-sun explained her decision to take on this role: “I was looking for a genre-specific project. The story, centered around a mysterious incident involving a woman, intrigued me. I was fascinated by Sara Kim’s multifaceted identity and eager to see how the story would unfold. The anticipation of the ending compelled me to join this project.”

Lee Jun-hyuk shared his perspective: “I’m drawn to characters driven by desire. Sara Kim’s character piqued my interest in this project. Mu-gyeong presented many aspects I wanted to explore as an actor, making it a challenging but exciting choice. Knowing Shin Hye-sun was involved gave me confidence, and I trusted director Kim Jin-min to guide my performance effectively.”

Shin Hye-sun’s character, Sara Kim, is the Asia branch manager of Buduah, a brand that has skyrocketed to fame by targeting only the top 0.1%. However, her name, past, and entire identity remain shrouded in mystery. Shin described her character as “enigmatic, holding the key to all the central events of the story.”

To portray this complex character, Shin Hye-sun focused on conveying the layers of Sara Kim’s life and identity. She explained, “I deliberated on whether to create stark contrasts in my acting or subtle variations within a similar range. After extensive discussions with the director, we decided that visual changes were crucial. The distinct differences in costumes and makeup, along with shifts in atmosphere for each facet of the character, greatly enhanced my performance.”

Director Kim Jin-min praised Shin Hye-sun’s casting, stating, “Portraying a character with multiple faces requires immense potential from an actor. Once Shin Hye-sun was cast, I felt my job as a director was largely complete.” He added that his trust in her abilities only grew stronger during their collaboration on set.

He commended her performance, saying, “She demonstrated incredible focus, fully immersing herself in each scene and trusting her instincts. The moments that impressed me most are beautifully captured on screen.” Kim emphasized that the final product reflects the mutual trust between the actors and himself.

Lee Jun-hyuk embodies detective Mu-gyeong, who investigates the Sara Kim case with sharp intuition. His character becomes increasingly entangled in questions as new truths emerge throughout his investigation.

Lee highlighted the importance of balance in portraying Mu-gyeong, who interacts with various characters while pursuing the case. He reflected, “I realized that overthinking could create a disconnect with the audience. Communication with the director became crucial in maintaining the right balance.”

He described the filming environment as one of “healthy tension rather than mere comfort.” Lee elaborated, “Since Mu-gyeong is the thread connecting all characters, I remained acutely aware of how to maintain the balance of tension and relationships on set. The director’s guidance was instrumental in achieving this without going overboard.”

Director Kim Jin-min identified Lee Jun-hyuk’s Mu-gyeong as a pivotal element in the series. He explained, “While it was crucial to have a character driving the narrative around Sara Kim, Mu-gyeong, who pursues her to the end, essentially represents the audience’s perspective. The choice of actor for this role significantly influenced the work’s overall tone.” He added, “As the character becomes increasingly complex, it required an actor who could handle its nuances skillfully.”

Reflecting on their collaboration, Kim shared, “Mu-gyeong was the most challenging character to direct, as any inconsistency in his portrayal could disrupt the entire balance of the drama. Lee Jun-hyuk’s insightful questions on set helped prevent many potential missteps in the directing process. I’m grateful for an actor who contributed so much to solidifying the work.”

The series’ tension is amplified through the dynamic between Shin Hye-sun and Lee Jun-hyuk. While Shin Hye-sun constantly shifts her character’s facade, Lee Jun-hyuk’s unwavering pursuit drives the narrative forward. Their push-and-pull relationship creates a compelling density to the story.

The key to their on-screen tension was intense focus. Lee Jun-hyuk explained, “I approached each scene believing Mu-gyeong’s sole focus should be on Sara Kim. I followed Shin Hye-sun with an unwavering gaze, as if my eyes were the camera lens. I concentrated on capturing every subtle change in her expression.”

Shin Hye-sun echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the intensity of their one-on-one scenes. “These moments required the highest level of concentration I’ve experienced in my career,” she shared. “The intensity of my co-star’s focus was palpable.”

She added, “These scenes couldn’t succeed with just one person’s strong performance; they required both of us to maintain equal intensity and focus to be truly effective.” Both actors agreed that while the process was challenging and at times stressful, it resulted in some of the most powerful and memorable scenes of their careers.

In closing, director Kim Jin-min and the actors shared their hopes for the series. Kim stated, “Ultimately, the audience will determine the success of our work. We’ve given our all, and now we humbly await their response.” He emphasized, “This project has been a significant experience for me as a director. I’m grateful for the time spent with these two remarkable actors. ‘Lady Dua’ will showcase their strength, transformation, and future potential in ways audiences haven’t seen before.”

Lee Jun-hyuk believes ‘Lady Dua’ tells a story that resonates with current times. He remarked, “The pure desire driving Sara Kim’s character is both fascinating and meaningful. The journey of following that desire makes for an engaging viewing experience.” He added, “This project allowed Shin Hye-sun to pour her heart and soul into her performance, which is something to look forward to.” Shin Hye-sun expressed her hopes, saying, “I wish for viewers to enjoy their time with this series. My desire is for it to leave a lasting impression and become a work that people want to revisit.”

‘Lady Dua’, consisting of 8 episodes, is set to premiere on October 13th.
