Jeon Jong-seo and Lee Chung-hyun’s Company ‘Summer’: A Case Study in Legal Risks for Celebrity Ventures

Daniel Kim Views

The directorial-muse relationship that began with the film ‘Call’ has blossomed into a public romance. However, the “romantic partnership” between actress Jung Jong-seo and director Lee Chung-hyun, hailed as Chungmuro’s hippest and hottest couple, has been marred by an unexpected legal controversy.

The corporation they jointly established has exposed an administrative oversight of “unregistered operation,” raising alarming suspicions of potential tax evasion.

According to industry insiders on the 10th, Jung Jong-seo founded a one-person corporation called “Summer” in June 2022, with Lee Chung-hyun listed as an internal director. The issue lies in the fact that they only completed the registration for “popular culture and arts planning business” on the 4th of this month, nearly one year and eight months after the company’s establishment.

The crux of this controversy lies in the question of intent. Jung Jong-seo’s representatives claim, “The company was created for content planning and production, not management. We were unaware of the need for registration due to the lack of actual operations.”

Critics, however, argue that this explanation seems remarkably naive coming from a top actress and director well-versed in the entertainment industry’s inner workings. Current law mandates that companies intending to manage entertainers or including such purposes in their articles of incorporation must undergo a registration process.

“Summer” was likely envisioned as a “second creative base” for the powerhouse duo of Jung Jong-seo and Lee Chung-hyun. However, in their pursuit of “artistic ambition,” they demonstrated a staggering lack of competence in managing crucial legal and administrative risks. This situation exposes the structural limitations faced by celebrities who hastily establish one-person agencies without professional management expertise.

Public scrutiny has intensified due to timing. With the National Tax Service recently cracking down on tax evasion and illegal gifting through celebrities’ one-person agencies, “Summer’s” nearly two-year registration delay has raised significant suspicions.

Their agency, Andmark, vehemently denies tax evasion allegations, stating, “All of Jung Jong-seo’s income has been properly reported as personal income.” They insist there was no intention to misuse corporate funds or reduce tax liability.

Nevertheless, the label of “illegal operation” has already stuck. Even if the oversight stemmed from simple ignorance, the fact that two leading figures in the entertainment industry failed to adhere to basic procedures has tarnished their professional image.

Jung Jong-seo and Lee Chung-hyun have been celebrated for their synergy both on and off screen. However, this incident serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of risk management when romantic partners become business collaborators.

While passion may fuel romance, business demands cool rationality. Although they’ve belatedly completed the registration process, this episode – now linked to the unsavory specter of “tax evasion” – leaves a painful lesson for Chungmuro’s young power couple.
