[EPN] Actress Baek Ji-hye is making waves with her compelling performance in ENA’s Monday-Tuesday drama “Honor: Their Court.”

Baek’s portrayal of Lee Sun-hwa has captivated viewers with its unpredictable duality. While her abrasive and sharp-tongued demeanor initially repels, there’s an undeniable magnetism that keeps audiences glued to the screen. Post-broadcast, viewers have been buzzing with comments like, “It’s unsettling, yet I can’t look away.”

The dynamic between Lee Sun-hwa and Min-seo (played by Jeon So-young) is a tangled web of complexity. Sun-hwa refers to herself as Min-seo’s mother, but their bond defies simple familial labels. What ties them together isn’t blood or traditional caregiving, but a shared history of survival against the odds. Their interactions are a push-and-pull dance, more about weathering life’s storms together than offering unconditional support.

Episode 3 throws their fractured relationship into stark relief. Upon discovering Min-seo’s connection to a criminal syndicate, Sun-hwa attempts to sell this information to Yoon Ra-young (Lee Na-young) and Hwang Hyun-jin (Lee Cheong-ah) for a cool 30 million KRW (22,500 USD). This calculated move underscores Sun-hwa’s pragmatism, proving she’s not one to let emotions cloud her judgment when survival is at stake.

In the pivotal scene where Sun-hwa proposes the deal, Baek Ji-hye’s nuanced performance shines. Her face is a canvas of conflicting emotions – resolve warring with uncertainty. When interacting with Min-seo, she exudes a mix of rigid control and underlying concern. It’s clear that Sun-hwa’s seemingly callous exterior is a shield forged by years of hardship. This multifaceted characterization has viewers hanging on her every word and gesture.

Baek Ji-hye’s ability to breathe life into complex characters is nothing new. Her impressive body of work, including “Parole Officer Lee Han-shin,” “Iduna!,” “Race,” and the film “Woongnam,” showcases her talent for portraying authentic, emotionally resonant roles. Her trademark restrained performances, particularly in conveying anxiety and tension, leave a lasting impact on audiences.

“Honor: Their Court” airs on ENA every Monday and Tuesday at 10 PM KST. Cord-cutters can catch the show on KT Genie TV and Coupang Play.
