12 Million Views Later: The 687-Mile Running Animation Taking the Internet by Storm

A project that blends technology and art — and goes beyond simple exercise — has ignited interest online.

Toronto-based Duncan McCabe’s striking effort has drawn widespread admiration.

Recently, X (formerly Twitter) and other social platforms have spotlighted his project, pushing it to the center of online conversation.

Duncan used a GPS-tracking app to plan his running routes with precision and then stitched multiple days of runs together like frames in an animation. The result is a so-called “Strava Art” that looks like a playful figure dancing across an ordinary map. Observers say the work stretches the boundaries of sport and creativity.

The video, posted by the Out of Context Human Race account, drew roughly 12.7 million views soon after it went live. According to the post, he ran a total of 1,105 km (about 687 miles) over the course of a year, logging each step carefully.

Notably, he didn’t just map a single static image; he linked routes from multiple days to create the impression of movement.

Many online commenters praised his persistence. “I can barely get out to eat,” one wrote, “so I salute his yearlong dedication to art.” Still, some viewers raised doubts, pointing to moments when the animated figure appeared to diverge from the recorded route and suggesting the clip may have been digitally edited.

Strava art has already evolved into its own culture among cyclists and runners. After French athletes mapped a giant velociraptor-shaped route and set a world record, McCabe’s “dancing person” project again captured global attention by conveying not just a flat image but the element of time and motion.

Regardless of the authenticity debate, his 1,105 km of tracked runs has provided fresh inspiration for many.
