Noel Defends Swings: The Controversial ‘Lifetime Settlement’ in Korean Hip-Hop Explained

The feud in Korea’s hip‑hop scene that began with BIG Naughty’s explosive claims and Swings’ rebuttal intensified when Noel (born Jang Yong‑jun) entered the fray. As questions about accounting practices and the sale of neighboring rights grew louder, Noel published a long post on social media on April 17 defending Swings and positioning himself at the center of the dispute.

Noel used his social channels to set out his view in detail on the recent controversy over his label’s accounting and alleged sales of neighboring rights. The row began after BIG Naughty released a track the day before accusing Swings of past misconduct and of disposing of neighboring rights without artists’ consent. Swings denied the allegations on a live broadcast and cited recent contract renewals with artists such as Noel and Yang Hong‑won to defend his credibility.

Noel began his post by criticizing the public’s appetite for sensationalism. He compared the disputed payment structure to standard entertainment contracts and praised Swings’ management style. He noted that, while it’s common industry practice for settlements to continue for two to three years after an exclusive contract ends, Swings’ approach includes an unusual “lifetime settlement” arrangement.

Noel added that he understands such a system isn’t an automatic right and that he remains grateful to Swings for it.

Noel also drew a firm line around the expectation that artists explain internal business decisions or personal relationships to the public. He said minor grievances can occur in any organization and emphasized that Swings, along with colleagues who left the label after their contracts ended, remain mentors and valued collaborators in his musical life.

Pushback against excessive demands for explanations — calls to end the draining attacks

Noel urged people to stop the unproductive criticism and disputes, noting that everyone has different circumstances. He concluded that the most he can do is state his position. Noel re‑signed with Swings’ label, Indigo Music, in 2023 and has maintained that relationship since.

BIG Naughty’s direct exposé and Swings’ rebuttal — how the conflict escalated

The confrontation escalated after BIG Naughty released a track titled INDUSTRY KNOWS on his YouTube channel on the 16th. The flashpoint came when a video from a recent club performance, showing BIG Naughty making pointed remarks about Swings, circulated online.

Artists on Swings’ Indigo Music responded with a countertrack. BIG Naughty replied again, leveling three central accusations in his lyrics: that the label made inappropriate proposals to signed artists, that neighboring rights were sold without artist consent for private gain, and that an assault occurred at a past drinking gathering.

Swings answered those claims in a live broadcast. He said tensions worsened when BIG Naughty reportedly chose another label at the last minute during recruitment, which created a feeling of betrayal. On the contested sale of neighboring rights, Swings explained that he sold rights valued at about 14 billion KRW (approximately $10.5 million) to address an advance‑payment shortfall of around 12 billion KRW (approximately $9.0 million) stemming from failed investments.

Swings said the sale was a business decision aimed at preserving the artists’ earnings, not enriching himself, and that he obtained the members’ consent despite some initial opposition. He pointed to the recent contract renewals of Noel and Yang Hong‑won as evidence.

On the assault allegation, Swings denied the account and said the facts had been distorted. He acknowledged there had been physical contact at a past gathering but characterized it as defensive — a reaction to what he described as threatening behavior by BIG Naughty — and said CCTV footage supported his version of events.

He also published message logs he said showed a reconciliation process after the incident and stressed that the matter had been resolved. The controversy has resurfaced alongside earlier accusations of infighting in the hip‑hop scene, raised by artists such as Sik‑K three years ago. With both sides holding firm to opposing accounts, public debate over the truth is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.
