Son Chang-min said he once traded roles in a production to help junior actor Shin Hyun-joon.
Son appeared as a guest on MBN’s variety show Kim Ju-ha’s Day and Night, which aired on the afternoon of the 4th. He debuted at age seven and is now in his 55th year as an actor. It marked his first variety-show appearance in two decades.
On the episode, Son said he had been concerned that Shin’s image had become fixed after his intense Japanese character in the film The General’s Son. When they worked together on the 1995 KBS2 drama Baramui Adeul — which also starred Lee Byung-hun — Son made a bold pitch to the director: “Let’s swap roles.”
The director was taken aback, asking, “What are you talking about?” Son persuaded him, saying, “I want to give my role to (Shin) Hyun-joon as a gift.” In the end, Son took the villain while Shin played the hero.
When the panelists applauded the move, Son quipped, “I’m that cool,” then laughed and added, “That guy (Shin Hyun-joon) might not even remember.”
