[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Comedian Hong Yun-hwa has opened up about how losing 40 kg has changed her life.
The March 31 episode of SBS’s Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 — You Are My Destiny featured Seo Eun-hye and Hong Yun-hwa.
Seo Eun-hye, a writer with Down syndrome, told Hong she finds her endearing and confessed she’s a fan. Seo said she’s seen Hong on MBC’s Midnight Ghost Stories and declared herself a fan. Kim Gu-ra, the show’s MC, quipped that he’s appeared on the program twice and joked, “If you like her this much, imagine how much I’d like her after seeing her every day.” Lee Ji-hye and Lee Hyun added they might make appearances on Midnight Ghost Stories just to win Seo’s favor.
Hong drew attention after losing 40 kg (about 88 pounds) in nine months. Former athlete Seo Jang-hoon asked Seo Eun-hye whether Hong looks better now or before the weight loss. Seo Eun-hye laughed and said Hong’s videos pop up on YouTube, but again insisted she hadn’t watched them, which prompted more laughter.
Seo, who is also dieting, said she has lost 4 kg so far. She said her eating habits have changed and that she’s been eating mushrooms and carrots. When Lee Ji-hye asked whether Seo had originally disliked vegetables, Seo didn’t answer. Lee Ji-hye joked that she was determined to appear on Midnight Ghost Stories no matter what, drawing laughs.
In a taped segment, Hong visited a university hospital with her husband, Kim Min-gi. She explained why they went: after losing 40 kg recently, she began experiencing unfamiliar symptoms and felt she couldn’t manage them alone, so she sought medical advice.
At the hospital, Hong admitted she felt uneasy and that her body felt strange. She met with a leading obesity specialist and described her condition: “I lost 40 kg in nine months. I’m very tired. I’m not depressed, but I’ve become much calmer. Everything feels different and unfamiliar. I used not to feel cold — even in winter I’d wear a down coat just to fit in, not because I was cold. Now the world feels so cold; my hands tremble from it.”
The specialist said Hong’s body is adjusting to having less fat and that this is a normal part of the process.
Hong also said she intentionally gained 4 kg to address nutritional deficiencies. The specialist warned that this could signal the start of a rebound: deliberately gaining 4 kg to correct nutrient shortfalls isn’t necessarily wise. It might be an early stage of yo-yo weight gain, and a small lapse could lead to rapid weight regain.
