The Republic of Korea Navy’s newest Aegis destroyer, Jeongjo Daewang (8,200-ton class), sailed June 1 to join RIMPAC, the U.S.-led multinational exercise and the largest maritime training event in the world.
According to the navy, Jeongjo Daewang departed from the Jeju naval base on the 1st and will participate in RIMPAC at a U.S. naval base in Hawaii, with the exercise running from the end of this month through July and 31 countries taking part.
Commissioned in December 2024, Jeongjo Daewang is making its RIMPAC debut. For the first time as well, the exercise will include the 3,000-ton-class submarine Dosan Ahn Changho and P-8A maritime patrol aircraft.
Dosan Ahn Changho is scheduled to complete joint training alongside the frigate Daejeon and Canadian forces before steaming to Hawaii to join the wider exercise.
The landing ship Cheonjabong will conduct a Korea-Japan search-and-rescue exercise (SAREX) with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyer Kongo in international waters southeast of Jeju on the 7th, then proceed to Hawaii.
About 700 navy and marine personnel, AW-159 maritime operations helicopters, and 6 Korean amphibious assault vehicles (KAAVs) will deploy as part of the South Korean naval contingent at RIMPAC.
The navy said it will participate in a broad slate of sea and shore activities with partner nations, including port visits and berthing exercises, integrated force operations, surface combat drills, theater anti-submarine warfare, ground and amphibious training, port damage recovery, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief.
This year marks the 30th RIMPAC, and for the first time since Korea began participating — and the first time for any Asian nation — Korea will provide the Combined Fleet Maritime Component Commander (CFMCC).
Kim In-ho, commander of the Navy’s Mobile Fleet and a rear admiral who will serve as CFMCC, said, “Assuming the commander role for the first time represents our transition from a participating nation to a command nation.”
