Ukraine has asked the United States to supply air-defense weapons after Russian forces struck the country with an Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile.
On May 27 (local time), AFP and Reuters reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky sent a letter the day before to U.S. President Donald Trump requesting additional missiles for the Patriot air-defense system to blunt Russian ballistic-missile strikes. Zelensky said Ukraine relies almost entirely on the United States for ballistic-missile defense and asked for help securing Patriot PAC-3 interceptors and other systems, calling them essential to defend against Russian attacks.
He also said the pace of deliveries through NATO’s Priority Ukraine Support List (PURL) has not kept up with the threats Ukraine faces. NATO currently pools U.S.-made defense equipment under PURL to supply Ukraine, but deliveries have fallen short of what is needed.
Russian forces struck Kyiv last week with the Oreshnik. Named for the hazelnut, the weapon can carry either nuclear or conventional warheads and is reported to have a range of up to 5,000 km (about 3,100 miles). Russia used Oreshniks to strike the Dnipro region in November 2024 and the Lviv region in January.
