[Theguru=Reporter Jeong Deung-yong] A Chinese vehicle-mounted drone-defense system was spotted in the United Arab Emirates. Observers say it appears similar to China’s Guangjian-21A drone interceptor, though officials have not confirmed the exact model.
On the 16th, global defense-industry sources reported that a Chinese vehicle-mounted, laser-based anti-drone system was observed at Dubai International Airport.
Industry officials say the system resembles the Guangjian-21A China displayed at the 2022 Zhuhai Airshow in Guangdong. The Guangjian-21A is a directed-energy combat system designed to engage small unmanned aerial vehicles and other low-altitude, slow-moving, small aerial targets.
At the Zhuhai Airshow, Chinese organizers touted the Guangjian-21A’s ability to engage targets at “speed-of-light,” its strong directionality and high precision, controllable strike effects, low operating costs, and robust sustained-use capability.
Analysts say that sustained-use capability gives laser systems an edge over interceptor missiles when facing swarming or mass drone threats. Because laser weapons are limited by power supply rather than physical ammunition, they can sustain longer engagements and tend to have a lower cost per intercept than missile-based systems.
China has steadily developed vehicle-mounted laser anti-drone systems. Manufacturers integrate them on vehicles as modular, containerized units or on purpose-built platforms. Intended to defeat small, slow targets at short range, these systems have become a focal technology for the defense industry.
