President Donald Trump announced that U.S. forces and Nigerian troops killed Abu Bilal al-Munuki, the Islamic State’s No. 2, in a joint operation.
According to Yonhap News Agency on May 16, Trump wrote on Truth Social that \”Tonight, at my direction, brave U.S. troops and Nigerian forces flawlessly carried out a carefully planned, highly complex operation to remove from the battlefield the terrorist who had been one of the world’s most active.\” He used the post to publicly disclose the operation’s outcome.
Trump said Abu Bilal al-Munuki, IS’s global No. 2, may have thought he could hide in Africa, but he did not know that sources were tracking his activities.
He added that al-Munuki \”can no longer threaten civilians in Africa or help plan operations targeting Americans,\” and said the militant’s removal has significantly degraded IS’s global operations.
Trump has repeatedly raised the possibility of military action, saying Christians in Nigeria have faced persecution amid frequent IS attacks. U.S. forces, working with the Nigerian military, struck IS positions inside Nigeria as recently as last Christmas.
