The HMM-operated container ship that caught fire while anchored in the Strait of Hormuz is running an auxiliary generator as it awaits a tug.
Yonhap reported on May 5 that HMM NAMU remained on station in waters near the United Arab Emirates, where the fire broke out the previous day.
The blaze triggered an automatic shutdown of the ship’s electrical systems, leaving it unable to maneuver under its own power. Once tugs are secured, officials plan to tow the vessel to the nearby Port of Dubai. Six South Korean crew members are expected to return to Korea afterward.
HMM said all 24 crewmembers, including South Korean sailors, remain aboard and have reported no injuries from the fire.
An HMM official said, \”The crew could disembark immediately if they chose, but firefighting is finished and there are no remaining hazards, so they appear to have decided to stay on board.\”
HMM has activated its fleet operations center in Busan and is coordinating to secure local tugs in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other nearby ports.
Given towing logistics and scheduling, officials say it could take several days before investigators can begin a formal probe into the cause of the incident. HMM added that crew on scene have not yet re-entered the area affected by the fire.
The incident began at about 8:40 p.m. the previous day (Korean time), when an explosion and subsequent fire erupted aboard HMM NAMU in waters of the Strait of Hormuz near the UAE. HMM reported no casualties.
