Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries: Investigating cause of explosion and extent of damage
Officials confirmed there were no casualties after an explosion aboard a Panama-flagged vessel operated by HMM in the Strait of Hormuz. Government authorities, including the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, announced the update around 11 p.m. KST on the 4th and said they are investigating the cause and assessing the damage.
According to the ministry, at about 8:40 p.m. that day (KST), an HMM-operated vessel that was anchored near the United Arab Emirates in the Strait of Hormuz experienced an explosion that ignited a fire.
The ship was carrying six South Korean crew members and 18 foreign crew members. Authorities said there have been no casualties reported to date.
The ministry is examining the cause of the blast and fire and is determining the precise extent of the damage.
The ministry said, “The government will maintain close communication with relevant countries and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of our vessels and crew in the inner Strait of Hormuz.”
