Traffic slowed to a crawl and, in many areas, came to a standstill on highways and major national roads nationwide on the first day of the extended holiday leading up to Children’s Day.
The Korea Expressway Corporation estimated that roughly 6.05 million vehicles used the highways on the 1st, and that a drive from the Seoul tollgate to Busan took as long as 9 hours and 10 minutes.
At peak congestion, the agency said travel times stretched to about 7 hours and 30 minutes to Gwangju, 8 hours and 10 minutes to Mokpo, and 6 hours and 20 minutes to Gangneung.
Officials expect traffic heading away from Seoul to begin easing between roughly 9 and 10 p.m., while routes into the capital may not clear until about 10 to 11 p.m.
