YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile launch
The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported Wednesday (28) that the Chinese military released footage of the YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile, often dubbed an “aircraft carrier killer.” Unveiled at last year’s parade marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Japan, the YJ-20 is reported to have a range of 1,000–1,500 km (about 620–930 miles) and to reach speeds up to Mach 10 in its terminal phase. The People’s Liberation Army says the missile is capable of sinking large warships. Meanwhile, Chinese destroyers and frigates operated in waters southwest of Taiwan’s Penghu Islands, prompting Taipei to deploy naval and air assets to monitor their movements. The SCMP noted that the deployment coincided with the annual Balikatan exercises led by the United States and the Philippines. Japan participated in the operational phase of the drills for the first time, and Beijing denounced a Japanese destroyer’s transit through the Taiwan Strait to join the exercises as a deliberate provocation. Beijing also criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi after she called for revisions to three security-related documents and urged preparations for long-term conflict, accusing Tokyo of racing toward remilitarization. At a regular briefing on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Zhen said Japan once waged aggressive wars and that Tokyo’s recent military and security moves undermine its claim to be a pacifist state. He also condemned a visit by 166 conservative LDP lawmakers to Yasukuni Shrine, saying the lawmakers were attempting to whitewash a history of aggression by honoring a shrine that enshrines convicted war criminals. Lin noted this year marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the Tokyo Trials and urged the international community to remain vigilant against what he described as Japan’s renewed slide toward militarism.
