The BBC, Britain’s public broadcaster, plans to cut about 9% of its workforce.
On April 15 (local time), the Associated Press reported that the BBC needs to shave £500 million (approximately 1 trillion 900 million KRW) from its budget over the next two years and intends to eliminate around 2,000 jobs — roughly 9.3% of its 21,500 full‑time staff.
Acting Director‑General Rhodri Talfan Davies is said to be weighing options that include closing entire channels and services. Talfan Davies told a radio program, “We are leaving every option on the table. To save £500 million we will have to make some tough choices.”
In an email to staff he warned, “The BBC is under severe financial pressure and needs to act quickly,” citing rising production costs, tightened revenues and global economic uncertainty as drivers of a growing deficit.
The broadcaster is also negotiating with the government over the periodic renewal of its Royal Charter — the legal basis for public funding — and the future of the licence fee.
Philippa Childs, chair of the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union (BECTU), cautioned, “BBC staff were already under intense pressure from earlier restructuring. Additional cuts would threaten the corporation’s public‑service mission.”
