[Digital Today reporter Seon Seul-gi] The Broadcasting, Media and Communications Commission (BMCC) announced on April 17 that it selected \”Media Guardians,\” created by Kim Jae-hyo, as the winner of its character contest to find an official mascot for public outreach.
\”Media Guardians\” translates the BMCC’s mission into a friendly mascot: protecting broadcasting independence and freedom of expression, safeguarding the public interest, promoting fair competition in the communications services market, and protecting user rights—presented in a cute, approachable design.
The contest, which sought a character embodying the BMCC’s mission, vision and identity, ran for about a month beginning in March and drew 146 entries. A six-member expert panel judged submissions based on originality, public appeal, scalability and overall quality. The Excellence Award went to Jo Won-a for \”Sintongi and Bangtong-i,\” and the Encouragement Award went to Yu Seong-hoon for \”Komi and Commu.\” Prize money was 1,000,000 KRW (approximately $750) for the grand prize, 500,000 KRW (approximately $375) for the Excellence Award, and 200,000 KRW (approximately $150) for the Encouragement Award.
The winning character will be used in digital content on the BMCC’s social channels—videos and card-style posts—and will be produced as merchandise such as keychains and device wallpapers. The commission also plans to feature the character in a range of promotional activities, including collaborations with other agencies’ mascots.
Kim Jong-cheol, chair of the BMCC, thanked the public for their imaginative contributions. \”The character we’ve selected will serve as a communications messenger, helping us convey broadcasting, media and communications policy in a clear and engaging way,\” he said.
