The nationwide contest aimed at finding a symbolic mascot to represent the agency’s identity and make it more approachable to the public drew 146 submissions.
The Broadcasting, Media and Communications Commission announced on April 17 that it selected Kim Jae-hyo’s “Media Guardians” as the winner of the BMCC Character Contest, a competition to find an official mascot to refresh the agency’s public outreach.
The design translates the BMCC’s core mission into a friendly, approachable character: protecting broadcasting independence and freedom of expression, ensuring public-service values, promoting fair competition in the telecommunications market, responding proactively to digital convergence, and safeguarding users’ rights.
Alongside “Media Guardians,” which took the top prize (Chairman’s Award), the Excellence Award went to Jo Won-a’s “Sintongi and Bangtongi,” and the Encouragement Award went to Yoo Seong-hoon’s “Komi and Commu.”
Created through public participation, the official mascot will be used across the BMCC’s social media channels in videos, card-news posts and other digital communications. The commission plans to produce both physical and digital merchandise—keychains, device wallpapers and other goods—to boost the agency’s visibility and will actively deploy the mascot in promotional campaigns, including collaborations with other agencies’ characters.
Kim Jong-chul, chair of the BMCC, said, “The selected mascot will serve as a communications messenger, helping us present broadcasting, media and telecommunications policies in simple, engaging ways.”
