U.S. President Donald Trump warned he would impose a blockade on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
On the 12th, local time, Trump wrote on his social media that the U.S. Navy — the world’s most powerful naval force — would immediately begin a blockade of all vessels entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz.
He said, “There may come a time when ‘all ships are allowed to pass,’ but Iran has been blocking passage by saying, ‘There might be mines somewhere.'”
Trump called the tactic “extortion against the world,” and added that world leaders — especially the United States — will not be extorted.
He said he had ordered the U.S. Navy to locate and intercept any vessels on the high seas that paid tolls to Iran, warning that anyone who paid such illegal fees would not be able to sail safely on the high seas.
