[TV Daily reporter Choi Hana] In MBC’s Friday–Saturday drama 21st Century Great Madam, IU’s character puts forward a set of terms for a contract marriage with Byeon Woo-seok’s character.
In episode 2, which aired the night of the 11th, Seong Hee-ju (IU) surprises Grand Prince Lee An (Byeon Woo-seok) by proposing marriage. Lee An asks what conditions she has in mind. Seong Hee-ju answers plainly, \”I have money.\” Taken aback, Lee An admits he expected something more imaginative. Seong Hee-ju shoots back, \”What’s the point of being creative? A contract marriage is predictable. Familiar flavors are better, and familiar paths are prettier.\” She goes on to outline her qualifications: \”My schooling is solid, and my abilities are stronger still. I do have an older brother, but you don’t need to worry about him. You don’t like meddling in-laws, do you?\” Then she adds, \”I’m resilient. I’m a capable woman, and I’m the illegitimate child of a chaebol—do you know how much I get criticized? You probably don’t. I’ll keep you from ever knowing, so use me as your shield.\” Seong Hee-ju closes with a cold-eyed assurance: \”You’ll divorce me when the time comes.
