U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegses declared a decisive victory, saying the military operation against Iran achieved its objectives.
At a Pentagon briefing on the 8th (local time), Secretary Hegses said the Iran-focused operation, dubbed ‘Majestic Fury,’ delivered a decisive victory.
He said the operation completed the Defense Department’s role and offered an opportunity to move toward a lasting peace alongside a cease-fire agreement.
U.S. forces will remain on alert. Officials warned that if the cease-fire collapses or the terms are not honored, the U.S. could resume strikes against Iran.
Secretary Hegses said Iran would hand over enriched uranium to the United States and warned that, if Tehran fails to comply, the U.S. could secure it directly.
At the briefing, Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Cain said U.S. forces had accomplished their military objectives in Iran. He described the cease-fire as a temporary pause and said forces would stay prepared to resume combat if necessary.
Earlier, the United States and Iran abruptly agreed to a two-week cease-fire — 38 days after the outbreak of hostilities — in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
