By Im Si-ryeong, Sports Today — The production team behind JTBC’s Friday drama Shining has issued an apology after viewers criticized scenes that depicted drunk driving.
On March 31, the show’s producers told Sports Today that they \”humbly accept the criticism\” and will take special care to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The contested sequences aired in episodes 7 and 8 on March 27. In episode 7, Yeon Tae-seo (Park Jin-young) is offered a drink while dining with his grandfather. The episode shows a soju bottle and paper cups that imply alcohol consumption, and then depicts him getting behind the wheel and driving.
In episode 8, Bae Seong-chan (Shin Jae-ha) consumes a large amount of alcohol late at night, saying, \”I’ll leave quietly at dawn when I’m sober,\” yet is shown taking the wheel in the early morning despite acknowledging he had been drinking. That sequence drew particular criticism.
A viewer filed a complaint through the national complaints portal, urging authorities to conduct a strict and thorough review of the broadcast and to take appropriate measures in accordance with applicable regulations and standards.
The Korea Communications Standards Commission said it will review the submission and decide whether to place the matter on its agenda.
Meanwhile, Shining follows a close-knit group of young people whose shared world gradually becomes a guiding light for each other’s beliefs and life paths.
