V, a member of K-pop group BTS, discussed his decision to enlist with South Korea’s Special Duties Team (SDT).
He appeared as a solo guest on the YouTube program Fairy Table on the afternoon of the 29th.
Asked about his choice, he said, “I joined the Special Duties Team — SDT. It’s the unit responsible for internal security.” He explained his reasoning: “Since I was going to enlist anyway, I didn’t want it to be mentally draining. I wanted the challenge to be physical.”
He acknowledged the training was tough but rewarding. “I chose it because they promised rigorous, impressive training,” he said. “We did rappelling and a lot of demanding drills, and I even overcame my fear of heights.”
On getting in shape during his service, he said he wanted to keep a promise to fans: “I told them I’d come out healthier, so I worked hard.” After his discharge, he recalled, the bandmates joked at their reunion, “Are you retiring now?” He laughed and said he trimmed back down again.
