The Russian government warned it would take retaliatory measures if South Korea supplies lethal weapons to Ukraine.
Andrei Rudenko, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, told state-run TASS in an interview on March 28 (local time) that “we have consistently told South Korea, through various channels, that we cannot tolerate its direct or indirect participation in supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine.”
He pointed to the “Priority Assistance Request List (PURL),” a U.S.-led list of military aid requests for Ukraine, and said Seoul would face retaliatory measures if it used that framework to provide lethal weapons.
Rudenko warned that if Moscow’s warnings are ignored, relations with South Korea would suffer serious damage and Russia could be forced to retaliate. “We hope it does not come to that,” he added.
In the interview, Rudenko also warned Japan, saying Moscow would respond if Tokyo began to pose a threat to Russia’s Far East border.
“We are closely monitoring the situation,” he said. “If any further Japanese actions amount to a challenge or threat to Russia’s Far Eastern border, we will take appropriate countermeasures to ensure our defensive capabilities are not compromised.”
