Local outlets, including the Times of Israel, reported on the 26th (local time) that an airstrike killed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval commander who had overseen operations to enforce a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

An Israeli government official said IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri was killed in an airstrike in Bandar Abbas, the southern Iranian port city on the Strait of Hormuz.

The official said Tangsiri was responsible for efforts to control—and, if ordered, to close—the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy shipments.

Neither the Israeli military nor Iran’s forces have issued an official statement yet.

Tangsiri, a brigadier general appointed to lead the IRGC Navy in 2018, is credited with modernizing its capabilities, including fast-attack craft, mine warfare, anti-ship missile batteries and unmanned surface vessels (drone boats).
