In 1968, American scientist Peter Glaser introduced the groundbreaking concept of space-based solar power in the prestigious journal ‘Science.’ This innovative approach involves harvesting solar energy using satellites in geostationary orbit, approximately 35,786 km (22,236 miles) above Earth’s surface. The energy is then beamed back to Earth as microwaves, which ground-based antennas can capture and convert into electricity. Unlike terrestrial solar panels, space-based systems can harness sunlight continuously, unhindered by day-night cycles. While some researchers have proposed using laser beams instead of microwaves for energy transmission, these alternatives have yet to prove practical.

The United States has spearheaded technological advancements in this field. In 2024, a team from the California Institute of Technology successfully demonstrated the transmission of solar power from an orbiting satellite to Earth using microwave technology. The following year, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) completed a trial in which they reflected a laser beam off airborne mirrors to generate electricity from solar panels located 8.6 km (5.3 miles) away.

The entry of major tech companies has accelerated the shift from proof-of-concept to commercialization. Recently, SpaceX founder Elon Musk unveiled plans to launch a constellation of one million satellites to create a space-based data center powered by solar energy. By leveraging SpaceX’s reusable rocket technology and mass production capabilities for small satellites, the company could dramatically reduce the costs associated with space-based solar power. If excess electricity from these orbital data centers can be transmitted to Earth, it could revolutionize the global energy landscape.

Other nations are also making strides in this arena. Japan aims to deploy a 1GW space-based solar power system in the 2030s. China plans to conduct technology demonstrations on its Tiangong space station by 2028. The European Union has set targets for demonstration by 2030 and full-scale commercialization by 2040. However, the potential dual-use nature of this technology raises security concerns. If laser beams generated by satellite solar power systems could be repurposed for missile defense or as offensive weapons, it could destabilize global security. While the Outer Space Treaty prohibits the militarization of space, the declining influence of the United Nations casts doubt on its enforceability. Despite these developments, South Korea lags behind, still in the early stages of conceptual research. To address this gap, it’s crucial for the nation to foster collaboration between government, industry, academia, and the military to advance research in this field, considering both economic and national security implications.
