South Korea faces renewed competition in the Saudi defense market as Turkey’s KAAN fighter jet emerges as a contender.

Recent reports from military media outlets, including ARMY RECOGNITION, indicate that Turkish President Erdoğan has expressed openness to potential joint investments in the KAAN fighter with Saudi Arabia.

This isn’t Turkey’s first attempt to penetrate the Saudi market with the KAAN fighter. Ankara has previously pitched the KAAN to Riyadh, with speculation suggesting a potential deal for up to 100 jets.

Saudi Arabia had previously sought to acquire U.S. F-35 fighter jets, but Washington has withheld export approval due to diplomatic concerns with Israel. As a result, Riyadh is now exploring alternative fighter options.

Turkey is capitalizing on this opportunity by persistently proposing the KAAN fighter to Saudi officials while also seeking to expand defense cooperation in other areas, including unmanned aerial vehicles.

However, as the KF-21 also targets the Saudi defense market, Turkey’s moves pose a significant challenge for South Korea’s defense industry.

Although South Korea is a relative newcomer to fighter jet development compared to the U.S. and Europe, it aims to capitalize on new opportunities in the defense market with the KF-21. The aircraft has garnered interest from nations such as the Philippines, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, raising expectations for its export potential.

The challenge lies in the significant overlap between the target markets for Turkey’s KAAN and the KF-21. Turkey has already secured a contract to export up to 48 KAAN jets to Indonesia, a co-developer of the KF-21, and is actively promoting the KAAN to Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

The shared Islamic heritage between Turkey and many Middle Eastern nations could potentially give the KAAN an edge over the KF-21 in these markets.

It’s crucial to recognize that the defense industry is influenced not only by weapon performance but also by external factors such as geopolitics, diplomacy, and cultural ties.

Urgency to Establish Export Market Dominance

As Turkey increasingly threatens the KF-21’s potential export markets, experts urge South Korea to accelerate its KF-21 export efforts.

In the defense industry, a successful initial export often leads to increased visibility and subsequent sales. South Korea’s determination to secure KF-21 orders from Indonesia, despite challenges, reflects a strategic move to swiftly establish its export market presence.

While Turkey is making significant efforts to secure potential export countries, delays in the development of KAAN prototypes have slowed its progress compared to the already mass-produced KF-21.

If South Korea can secure export deals for the KF-21 first, it could maintain a competitive edge and steady growth, despite the emerging challenge from the KAAN.
