Veteran actor Shin Gu pays tribute to the late Lee Soon-jae
The press conference for the upcoming play “French Vault” was held on the 10th at the NOL Seogyeong Square Scon 1 theater in Daehakro, Seoul. The event was attended by director Jang Jin and a star-studded cast including Shin Gu, Seong Ji-roo, Jang Hyun-seong, Kim Han-gyeol, Jeong Young-joo, Jang Young-nam, Choi Young-jun, Joo Jong-hyuk, Kim Seul-gi, Geum Sae-rok, Jo Dal-hwan, and Ahn Du-ho.
During the conference, Shin Gu candidly admitted, “I think I jumped into this project too quickly. Now that we’re in production, I’m realizing there are numerous challenges that are tough to overcome. I wonder if my ambition got the better of me.”
The seasoned actor elaborated on his struggles, saying, “My body isn’t as cooperative as it used to be. I’m facing various physical limitations. I’m constantly thinking about how to overcome these obstacles so I don’t hold back the production. It’s frustrating when my body doesn’t respond the way I want it to. With age, my memory isn’t what it used to be either – I forget things almost immediately.”
Director Jang Jin came to Shin Gu’s defense, stating, “Among all the actors I’ve worked with, he sets the highest standards for himself.” He continued, “I always strive to maintain a high level of professionalism and often think, ‘Let’s just nail the basics,’ but Shin Gu’s idea of ‘basics’ is on another level entirely. That’s why he sometimes expresses his frustrations.”
Jang further praised Shin Gu’s dedication, noting, “During rehearsals, he’s always present, rarely leaving his seat. He’s constantly taking notes, pen in hand.” The director expressed his confidence in the production, adding, “He’s fully committed to the rehearsal process. His high standards are what push us all to excel, so I have no doubts about our readiness to face the audience.”
In a poignant moment, Shin Gu reflected on the recent loss of his peer, saying, “With Lee Soon-jae’s passing, it feels like there’s no one left for me to look up to in the industry.” He added with determination, “But as long as I’m still breathing, I should continue doing what I’ve dedicated my life to. It won’t be easy, but I’m committed to giving it my all.” His words resonated deeply with those present.
“French Vault” promises to be a thrilling production, centering on the chaos that ensues when five characters converge in a bank’s basement, driven by the tantalizing rule: “At midnight, when all power fails, the vault will open.” Theater enthusiasts can catch the performances from March 7 to May 31 at the NOL Seogyeong Square Scon 1 in Daehakro.
