Actress Jang Hye-jin’s Journey: From Sales to Stardom – What Inspired Her Return to Acting?

[EPN Enpinao] Actress Jang Hye-jin made a guest appearance on a radio show on February 10, where she took a deep dive into her acting philosophy and life journey.

Following her 1998 debut, Jang stepped away from the spotlight. She reminisced about a period when, grappling with self-doubt and the weight of expectations, she traded the glitz of showbiz for the aisles of supermarkets and department stores.

During this retail stint, Jang became a star salesperson, meticulously arranging everything from tissues to shampoos and fabric fresheners. She credits this experience with honing her people skills and building the emotional repertoire crucial for her acting career, attributing her success to sheer passion and dedication.

Jang’s path back to acting was paved by three pivotal encounters. She recounted how director Bong Joon-ho approached her with an audition offer for “Memories of Murder” while she was still in sales, a proposition that left her at a crossroads.

Fast forward to 2007, and Jang found herself on the set of Lee Chang-dong’s “Secret Sunshine,” having impressed with her raw emotion during the audition. She vividly remembered being moved to tears by the director’s words of encouragement.

Jang also shared how she met her husband while volunteering as a Korean language teacher. His unwavering support, she said, became the bedrock of her renewed acting career.

Audiences can catch Jang in her latest role as Eun-sil, a concerned mother grappling with her son’s growing distance, in the upcoming film “Number One,” set to hit theaters on February 11. The movie weaves a touching narrative about family bonds through a mysterious number that appears whenever the son partakes in his mother’s cooking.
