Lee Jin-sook Hosts Book Launch in Daegu
Fielding Questions About Mayoral Candidacy
Maintains Cautious Stance, Avoiding Direct Responses

Former Korea Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Jin-sook has reignited her political career with a book launch in Daegu. When pressed about her potential run for mayor, she carefully sidestepped the issue, citing concerns over election law violations. On the afternoon of February 9, Lee held her book launch at the Grand Hotel in Daegu. Prior to the event, she faced inquiries from reporters about her intentions regarding the mayoral race.In response to these questions, Lee stated,“Discussing a mayoral run here could potentially violate election laws,”She further explained, “Campaign plans are subject to change, so it would be inappropriate to discuss them in this setting.”
Lee emphasized, “Today’s book launch is primarily an opportunity to share the essence of my work with readers.” Despite her reluctance to make official statements, the event’s atmosphere was ripe for political speculation.A close associate of Lee revealed, “To my knowledge, she intends to run for mayor of Daegu, and if the administrative merger of Daegu and Gyeongbuk proceeds, she aims to campaign for leadership of the unified entity.”

During the launch, Lee highlighted her deep ties to Daegu.
“While I was born in Seongju, Gyeongbuk, I’ve called Daegu home since second grade, attending school from elementary through university here,” she shared. Lee expressed her profound connection to the city, stating, “Daegu is truly the place that shaped my DNA.” She continued, “This city embodies the conservative values of responsibility and order, a strong sense of community, respect for tradition, and unwavering resilience. It’s time to reignite that pride.” Lee emphasized, “We must consider how to safeguard the democracy we’ve fought so hard to achieve and how we can contribute to South Korea’s future.”

The book launch drew a crowd of about 800, including notable political figures. The presence of former Dong-gu mayor Lee Jae-man and ex-National Assembly member Hong Seok-jun, both rumored mayoral candidates, fueled speculation. Local political observers interpreted this as a strategic pre-campaign move. Rumors of Lee’s potential candidacy have long circulated in Daegu, especially given her consideration of a mayoral run in the 2022 local elections. As such, there’s growing interest in how Lee will navigate her political future and what impact she might have on Daegu’s upcoming mayoral race.
