Former Korea Communications Commission Chair Lee Jin-sook has re-entered the political arena with a book launch in Daegu. When questioned about her potential candidacy for Daegu mayor, she responded cautiously, citing concerns over possible election law violations. Lee hosted her book launch on the afternoon of February 9 at the Grand Hotel in Daegu. Prior to the event, she fielded questions from reporters about her mayoral aspirations. In response to the inquiry, Lee stated, “Discussing a mayoral run here could potentially violate election laws,” thus sidestepping a direct answer. She added, “Candidacy plans can always change, so it wouldn’t be appropriate to discuss them at this time.”
Lee emphasized, “Today’s book launch is an opportunity to share the essence of my work with readers.” While she refrained from making official statements, the event’s atmosphere was ripe for political speculation. Notably, a close associate of Lee revealed, “To my knowledge, she plans to run for Daegu mayor and would consider running as the unified leader if the Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration occurs.”
During the launch, Lee highlighted her ties to Daegu by discussing her background. “Although I was born in Seongju, Gyeongbuk, I’ve been in Daegu since second grade, attending school from elementary through college,” she explained. Lee expressed her deep connection to the city, stating, “Daegu is where my DNA was formed.” She further remarked, “Daegu embodies the responsibility and order upheld by conservatives, a sense of community, respect for tradition, and unwavering determination. It’s time to reclaim that pride.” Lee added, “We must consider how to protect our hard-won democratic freedoms and contribute to South Korea’s future.”
The book launch attracted prominent political figures, with approximately 800 attendees reported. Notable guests included former Dong-gu Mayor Lee Jae-man and former National Assembly member Hong Seok-jun, both rumored mayoral candidates. This fueled speculation in local political circles that the event served as a prelude to a mayoral campaign. Rumors of Lee’s candidacy have long circulated in Daegu. Having previously considered a mayoral run in the 2022 local elections, this book launch has reignited interest in her potential political comeback. Consequently, observers are keenly watching how Lee will navigate her political decisions and what impact she might have on Daegu’s upcoming mayoral race.
