“2016 Favorites Like Surat Thani, Thailand Are Seeing a Comeback”
Home-sharing platform Airbnb on the 31st named three global summer travel trends: playcation (play+vacation), nearby travel, and nostalgia-driven trips.
In its Summer Travel Trends 2026 report, Airbnb says domestic travel is on the rise in both the U.S. and South Korea, and more travelers are planning trips specifically to pursue hobbies they love.
This summer’s headline trend is the playcation — short getaways focused on leisure and activities like golf, surfing, or lake recreation. Bookings near golf courses, lakes, and surf spots have already jumped in the U.S.
Instead of long-haul overseas trips, travelers are increasingly choosing nearby small towns and suburbs. With higher living costs making travel pricier, many are opting for shorter, closer escapes. The report finds one in three travelers now vacations close to home, and interest in lesser-known regional towns has grown.
Airbnb also notes that destinations popular with millennials back in 2016 are catching Gen Z’s eye again. Riding this wave of nostalgia, Gen Z isn’t just revisiting familiar hotspots — they’re exploring the surrounding, lesser-known areas too. Airbnb highlights Surat Thani in Thailand; the Greek islands Folegandros and Lefkada; Ubatuba and Fortaleza in Brazil; and Zaragoza and Santander in Spain as examples.
With the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicking off across North America, demand from soccer fans is spiking. An Airbnb spokesperson said the company lists 77% of available stays at $500 or less per night, and offers options for stays under $100 per person, predicting the event will be the biggest in Airbnb’s history.
