Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill, tucked into Songdo International City in Incheon, just reclaimed its five-star rating—holding on to its distinction as South Korea’s first five-star hanok hotel.
The property blends the timeless elegance of traditional Korean hanok architecture with modern hospitality. It now stands out as a premium overnight option and a signature landmark in Songdo.
On May 27, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority announced that in the hotel-rating assessment run by the Korea Tourism Association, Gyeongwonjae scored 90% or more when combining on-site and surprise inspections, securing its five-star status.
That result underscores the payoff from a brand refresh and service upgrades rolled out after last year’s operational restructuring.
After changing operators, the hotel focused on elevating service across the board—from guest rooms and food-and-beverage to front-of-house and facilities management.
They refreshed the lobby and guest flow, replaced signage, and added traditional sculptures created in collaboration with master artisan Choi Ki-young, a holder of a National Intangible Cultural Property. These moves enhanced the space’s symbolism and polish. In-room supplies and conveniences were upgraded as well.
The restaurant overhaul drew particular attention during recertification. The former “Sura” relaunched as “Dining Song” after a major remodel, transforming into a premium dining destination that balances traditional charm with contemporary design. Dining Song also earned a spot on this year’s Blue Ribbon list, proving its culinary clout.
The redesigned Dining Song stands out with interiors inspired by ocean waves and lighting that highlights the hanok’s graceful lines.
Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the hanok landscape, and expanded private dining rooms accommodate family celebrations, business meetings, and intimate gatherings.
The menu has shifted from single-item Korean plates to course-driven offerings that blend Korean and Western influences.
Seasonal and traditional ingredients are reinterpreted with a modern touch to lift the dining experience. Signature dishes include lobster zucchini roulade, Baekhwaban, and seaweed-and-shrimp soup.
Yoon Baek-jin, acting head of the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, said, “Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill’s renewed five-star certification is a meaningful achievement that reaffirms Songdo’s competitiveness in cultural and tourism infrastructure. We will continue to support efforts to establish it as a global tourist destination that combines the value of traditional hanok with high-quality service.”
Industry observers expect the hotel, which pairs traditional hanok beauty with modern amenities, to further cement its reputation as a global tourism draw.
