Tokyo is an endlessly dynamic metropolis that keeps revealing new layers every time you visit. With neighborhoods this vast and things to do by the minute, planning your first trip can easily feel daunting.

But with a smart route, you can pack Tokyo’s highlights—and those local, off-the-beaten-path spots—into a tight 3 nights, 4 days stay. Here’s a day-by-day guide to help you get the most out of a short but unforgettable escape.

[Day 1] Shibuya and Shinjuku

Drop your bags and dive straight into Tokyo’s electric center. Start in Shibuya—the trend capital—by crossing the iconic Shibuya Scramble and soaking up the energetic crowd.

Then head to Shibuya Sky for a jaw-dropping panorama of Tokyo Tower and the cityscape below—totally surreal at sunset.

When night falls, make your way to Shinjuku and slip into one of Omoide Yokocho’s tiny izakayas, where red lanterns set a cozy mood. Load up on charcoal-grilled skewers and wash them down with a crisp highball to kick off your trip in style.

[Day 2] Asakusa and Akihabara

Start your second day in historic Asakusa at Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple. Walk under the giant red lantern at Kaminari-mon and stroll down Nakamise-dori, sampling street treats like melonpan and dango while browsing traditional souvenirs.

For a memorable twist, hop in a rickshaw or rent a kimono for photos among the atmospheric streets. In the afternoon, flip the vibe completely and head to Akihabara, the global mecca for anime and electronics. Explore Radio Kaikan’s figure-packed shops and get lost in the neon, gadget-filled streets that are uniquely Akihabara.

[Day 3] Omotesando and Roppongi

On day three, start with a leisurely walk along Omotesando’s tree-lined avenue—often called Tokyo’s “Champagne Street.” Window-shop at architecturally striking luxury stores and peek into hidden concept shops tucked down side streets.

Near Cat Street, you’ll find famous takoyaki stalls with lines out the door and chic roastery cafes perfect for a relaxed coffee break. As evening approaches, head to Roppongi, Tokyo’s artsy nightlife hub.

Visit the Mori Art Museum for contemporary exhibits, then ride up to the Roppongi Hills observation deck for a romantic city view where Tokyo Tower pops against the skyline—an elegant way to end the day.

[Day 4] Ginza and Tokyo Station

On your final morning, squeeze in some last-minute shopping before heading to the airport. Wander Ginza to experience its sleek modernity mixed with traditional charm. Inside Ginza Six, admire the large-scale art installations and browse sophisticated lifestyle boutiques.

Finish at Tokyo Station’s Character Street, where you can pick up Ghibli, Pokémon, and other cute souvenirs—along with boxed desserts perfect for gifts. It’s an ideal last stop before you catch the Narita Express (N’EX) or the airport limousine bus.
