Wake up to the sky: Hoshino Resort Tomamu in Hokkaido, Japan, reopens its famed Unkai Terrace—where guests can witness dramatic seas of clouds and other dreamy cloud formations—starting May 13, 2026.
To kick off the season, the resort hosts a short opening ceremony designed to give visitors a memorable morning as they greet the sweeping sea of clouds.
This year’s 15-minute ceremony begins at 6:00 a.m. on May 13 and includes a whimsical “Cloud Release,” where soap bubbles shaped like clouds drift into the blue, followed by a communal champagne pop so guests can toast the view. Attendance is free, though same-day visitors may need to pay a separate round-trip gondola fare. Soap-bubble kits and champagne are available in limited quantities.
Just in time for the green season, Hoshino Resort Tomamu is debuting an original new souvenir called “Cloud Candy” on opening day. Shaped like fluffy cumulus clouds and flavored with a refreshing soda taste, Cloud Candy is meant to be the perfect sweet memento of your Unkai Terrace morning.
The candy will be sold exclusively at the terrace’s Unkai Shop and the “Cloud Post Office” for 550 yen (tax included), about $3.69, offering visitors a sweet keepsake from a special morning.
