We’ve handpicked seven must-visit international destinations for May. April raced by in a blur, and May brings ideal travel weather—pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and airfare and hotel rates that haven’t yet spiked for summer.

In 2026 especially, cultural festivals and stunning natural scenery peak across many spots—miss this window and you might be kicking yourself all year.

Florence truly shines in May. Before the summer glare sets in, a cool river breeze and the panoramic view of red-tiled rooftops from Piazzale Michelangelo are simply unforgettable.

Must-see stops like the Uffizi and the Duomo feel more relaxed this month. The Tuscan countryside around Florence is perfect for scenic drives—think endless green barley fields punctuated by vibrant poppies.

Average temperatures range from 12°C to 23°C (54°F to 73°F), so a light jacket is usually enough for all-day exploring. Grab a gelato in Piazza della Signoria and let the Renaissance vibes sink in.

Interlaken, Switzerland

In May, Switzerland looks like the set of a storybook—think Heidi-level charm. Interlaken, sitting between two lakes and serving as the gateway to Jungfrau, offers a dramatic mix of snowy peaks and fresh spring greenery.

It’s a prime month for paragliding, with emerald lakes spread beneath you. Take a cruise on Lake Brienz to visit quaint lakeside villages, or ride the Harder Kulm funicular for sweeping views.

Temperatures average 8°C to 18°C (46°F to 64°F). It can feel chilly, especially up top, so pack a lightweight down jacket for summit outings, but the clear skies make outdoor adventures very appealing.

Lisbon, Portugal

Perched on Europe’s western edge, Lisbon is at its most delightful in May. Before summer heat arrives, the city’s steep hills are comfortable to explore—you can hop on Tram 28 to weave through neighborhoods and catch an intimate fado performance.

Under clear May skies, Belém’s original pasteis de nata and the grandeur of the Jerónimos Monastery feel extra special. Don’t skip a day trip to fairytale Sintra—its palaces are worth every minute.

Average temps sit between 13°C and 22°C (55°F to 72°F). Low humidity and long daylight hours make it easy to pack your days with sightseeing and late-evening terrace time.

Seville, Spain

Seville, the beating heart of Andalusia, is most intoxicating in May. In the height of summer the city can top 40°C, so visiting now means enjoying warm days without the oven-like heat. The air filled with orange blossom scent is a highlight you won’t forget.

The soaring Gothic Seville Cathedral and the ornate tiles of Plaza de España gleam under clear skies. After dark, stroll the Guadalquivir riverside or dive into tapas bars tucked down narrow lanes for authentic late-night vibes.

Expect averages of 13°C to 26°C (55°F to 79°F)—pleasantly warm by day and perfect for lively evening outings.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini offers great value and gentle weather in May—an excellent window to avoid July and August crowds and inflated rates while still enjoying that iconic Mediterranean blue.

By May, winter winds calm and soft sunlight bathes whitewashed homes and cobalt roofs. The sea starts warming enough for comfortable swims, and the island is wonderfully walkable.

Averages around 16°C to 23°C (61°F to 73°F) with low humidity—ideal for island-hopping, picture-perfect sunsets, and long leisurely walks without the harsh summer sun.

Sapporo, Japan

While mainland Japan swelters in summer, Hokkaido opens into spring later and stays refreshingly cool. You can even catch late-blooming cherry blossoms into mid-May, and visitor numbers drop after Golden Week—perfect for a peaceful trip.

Odori Park hosts a lilac festival, and nearby Otaru offers crisp sea breezes. Temps average 8°C to 17°C (46°F to 63°F), similar to early spring back home. Fresh seafood rice bowls and a Sapporo Classic beer make for a blissful foodie day. For vibrant flower fields, plan side trips to Furano and Biei.

Da Nang, Vietnam

May in Vietnam typically arrives before the full monsoon, offering stable weather and clear seas—ideal for beach time. My Khe Beach is famed for its sunsets, and Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town is magical after dark.

Snap a shot on the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills or unwind at one of the country’s top beach resorts. Temperatures average 24°C to 33°C (75°F to 91°F). It’s warm, but the sea breeze keeps things comfortable—perfect for travelers who want a laid-back getaway with great food and spa time without peak-season crowds.

May is that perfect in-between—neither too hot nor too cold. Skip the summer rush and treat yourself to a stylish, more relaxed vacation this month.
