Across Donghae in Gangwon Province, venues transformed into family-friendly hubs for Children’s Day.
On the 5th, Donghae City, the Navy’s First Fleet and the Coast Guard said they spread the day’s programs across several sites — the Jeoncheon area, Mureung Byeol Yucheonji, the Donghae Coast Guard’s private pier and the First Fleet naval base. What began as simple performances expanded into hands-on experiences that blend safety, security, play and tourism.
Donghae City hosted a big Children’s Day festival in the Jeoncheon area, with play-and-activity booths including a bubble show, a magic show, instrument and craft workshops, police motorcycle rides and an air bounce. The event was organized by the Donghae City Daycare Association and offered a welcoming space for parents and kids to celebrate together.
Over at Mureung Byeol Yucheonji, the Donghae Bukpyeong Junior Chamber hosted a Paper Airplane Festival. Kids took part in paper-airplane contests, a stamp tour and family photo stations, and enjoyed magic and bubble shows. Organizers offered discounted admission for Gangwon residents and free entry for immediate family members with a multi-child card. Framed by lavender scenery, the festival helped expand the site’s family tourism appeal.
There were also sea-focused activities.
The Donghae Coast Guard opened its private pier to display patrol vessels and run maritime safety programs. Children toured large patrol ships, viewed a rescue helicopter, tried on Coast Guard uniforms and took commemorative photos with mascots. They also learned how to wear life jackets, received CPR instruction and tried rescue equipment — practical, hands-on lessons about sea safety.
The Navy’s First Fleet Command opened its Songjeong-dong base to mark the fleet’s 80th anniversary and Children’s Day. Three ships, including the Donghae, were on display. Visitors saw UDT/SEAL gear and tactical vehicles, tried on uniforms, explored naval and Marine Corps career programs and enjoyed a military band performance. A patriotic arts contest for elementary students let kids experience the navy’s role in protecting the East Sea.
This year, Donghae broadened offerings by combining city festivals, tourist-site experiences, maritime safety education and base open houses, giving families more ways to celebrate.
With Jeoncheon and Mureung Byeol Yucheonji focusing on play-and-tourism programs and the Coast Guard and Navy offering safety-and-security experiences, observers say Donghae City effectively turned its local assets into engaging Children’s Day content.
A Donghae City official said, “We prepared a variety of events so children can safely enjoy time with their families. We will continue expanding family-friendly programs that make use of local resources.”
